Pilsen is a neighborhood where art comes to life around every corner. Here bold murals have blossomed in the most unexpected places — on the fronts of homes, along railway overpasses, and wrapped around train platforms. The 16th Street railroad embankment in the neighborhood has become a canvas to experience some of Chicago’s and the world’s celebrated street artists. What started out as an organic movement to create murals along the embankment turned into the Art In Public Places Initiative led by a local organization. Since the initiative was started, about fifty new street art murals have been added to the two-mile embankment that runs along 16th Street from Halsted Street west to Western Avenue. Chicago street artists are represented well with names like Hebru Brantley, Sam Kirk, Chris Silva and Amuse. International artists include Rae, Roa, Gaia, The Yok, and Sheryo to name a few. Grab your camera and set off on a great street art exploration in the heart of Pilsen.
